The Canyon Del Oro softball team has done it again. On Monday night at Arizona State University’s Farrington Stadium, Canyon Del Oro defeated Peoria Sunrise Mountain 11-9 in the Division II Championships, winning in extra innings to claim the school’s eighth state title, and fifth in the last six years.

Kayla Bonstrum continued doing what she does best to lift the Dorados to the much-anticipated championship win.

In the top of the eighth inning, Bonstrum hit a two-run homerun to give the Dorados an 11-9 lead, and followed it up with a strikeout to seal the game.

But the win didn’t come without a skipped heartbeat or two.

The Dorados built a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, thanks largely to a grand slam from Sammi Noland in the fourth inning.

With CDO leading 9-5, Sunrise Mountain’s McKenzie St. Clair hit a grand slam to even the score, and sent the Dorados’ fans back into their seats.

But one inning later, they were standing again as the Dorados persisted to pull off the win, and send the Dorados into celebration.
