An 87-year-old man was killed yesterday after being struck by an SUV while crossing Thornydale Road near Ina Road.

Charles Greenleaf was struck about 7:45 a.m., according to Sgt. Tim Brunenkant of the Marana Police Department. The driver of the Chevy Suburban was traveling south on Thornydale and did not see Greenleaf, who was not walking in a crosswalk.

Greenleaf was taken to University Medical Center, where he died shortly after 9 a.m., Brunenkant said.

Greenleaf was a familiar face in the neighborhood and was often seen collecting cans at the shopping centers.

Witnesses told police officers he walked into traffic.

"I am told traffic on Thornydale is very busy with speeding traffic at that time of day. The driver did not see (Greenleaf) get into the roadway and didn't have time to stop," said Brunenkant.

He said no citations have been issued and no foul play is suspected.
