Rep. Adam Kwasman, R-Tucson, didn’t wait long to start looking at bigger opportunities, as the freshman state representative has now set his sights on winning the Congressional District 1 seat in midterm elections.

Kwasman announced Monday that he has formed an exploratory committee to look at running against Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick won the seat in a closely-contested race against Republican opponent Jonathan Paton last year.

Despite Kirkpatrick being in office, and having a lot of success in raising funds for the 2014 elections, Kwasman’s confidence isn’t swayed.

“We need less lawyers and more economists in Washington,” Kwasman, who has a background in finances, said. “(Kirkpatrick) does not second guess the president on anything. She is not an effective policy maker. I think the timing for this is right. It is the right time for a Republican to win over this district.”

Kwasman said he feels he can win over Independents and Democrats in the district by proving he can vote against party lines where necessary.

“I’m not afraid to go against the grain when need be while still holding my values,” he said.

When it comes to funding a campaign with Kirkpatrick having a big head start, Kwasman said he is confident he can match her in fundraising, while conceding she does have a two-quarter head start.

Kwasman said he has grown tired of petty politics along with the majority of Americans.  With a focus on the issues such as regaining a healthy economy, and pushing for healthy communities, Kwasman said his priorities are in line with what the nation needs.

“John Q taxpayer in Flagstaff is worrying about feeding his family, the cost of sending his children to college rather than thinking about petty politics that continue to go in  Washington,” Kwasman said.

Kwasman is in his first term as a state representative in District 11, which covers Oro Valley and Marana along with other areas in CD1.
