Tyler Skorupa, Twin Peaks Elementary School kindergarten student, was recognized by the Marana Unified School District Governing Board on Thursday, March 13, for earning a second place individual trophy at the 2014 Arizona State Grade Chess Championships.

Tyler Skorupa, Twin Peaks Elementary School kindergarten student, was recognized by the Marana Unified School District Governing Board on Thursday, March 13, for earning a second place individual trophy at the 2014 Arizona State Grade Chess Championships.

Tyler won four out of five games and earned the 2nd place individual trophy. Tyler competed against the best players from across the state. The 2014 Arizona State Grade Championship was held Jan. 11, at Sonoran Science Academy.

The State Grades tournament is divided into 10 sections by grade, starting with kindergarten, first grade, second grade, all the way to high school. Over 350 students competed. The tournament was sanctioned by the Arizona Chess Federation. Inc., which governs the awarding of State Champion events in Arizona.
