In what became a heated race for the Arizona Senate, Jeff Flake will replace Jon Kyl as the state’s new senator after defeating former Surgeon General and Democrat Richard Carmona.

Flake received 808,775 votes (50.42 percent) to Carmona’s 725,292 (45.22 percent).

“On behalf of my family and campaign staff, I want to thank you so much for your support during this campaign,” said Flake in a press release. “I’m extremely proud of the campaign we ran, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Following Senator Jon Kyl in the Senate, there are certainly large shoes to fill, but I’ll do my best to advance the principles of limited government, economic freedom, and responsibility. I am honored to be the next Senator from Arizona and I’m so grateful to have your support and friendship.”
