The Marana Police Department will be holding a gun auction for firearm-licensed dealers on Nov. 13 at the police station from 8 a.m. to noon.
The police station is located at 11555 W. Civic Center Drive and will take place in building B. The auction will have guns ranging from handguns to automatics to rifles. There will be about 120 firearms, all of which have been in the evidence inventory at the Marana Police Department for the last three to four years.
“All the guns that have been involved in a crime have been released to be sold or to get rid of. If we didn’t give it back to the owners then it’s because we have researched the guns already. If it’s found property than we have exhausted all efforts in locating the owner,” said Sgt. Jose Alvarez of the Marana Police Department.
There are two primary reasons that the police department is selling the firearms. The first is that Arizona statute 12-945 permits the sale of property if the owner or person entitled to the property has not responded after 60 days of being given notice. Firearms are only sold to federally fire armed licensed dealers who have provided a copy of a license to the police department and have undergone a background check. The police department is required to put all of the proceeds into the general fund of the jurisdiction. The Marana Police Department is also selling firearms in order to clear out space for incoming evidence.
“The auction is going to ensure that guns are disposed properly to licensed dealers,” said Alvarez. “It’ll take the guns off the streets and go to the right people.”
This is the first time the Marana Police Department hosted a gun auction. As of right now, they are the only ones putting something like this on, said Alvarez. A majority of licensed dealers in the county have been invited to the auction.
“We’ve had a lot of interest from gun dealers,” said Alvarez. “We’ll have to wait and see how it goes. I’m sure we’ll learn how to do things differently or better after it.”
