Oro Valley police have arrested 37-year-old Joseph Garica in connection with the killing of his father, 71-year-old Jose P. Garcia.
Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, police conducted a welfare check at the home of the elder Garcia, who lived at 562 W. Flaxen Drive, in a normally quiet neighborhood near North Rancho Vistoso Boulevard, after receiving a call from an out-of-state family member. The relative had been unable to contact the elder Garcia and had expressed concern for his welfare.
When officers arrived at the house, Joseph Garcia answered the door. He told police to check the garage. The elder Garcia was found dead with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Joseph Garcia was booked into the Pima County Jail on the charge of first-degree murder. The investigation is ongoing, according to Lt. John Teachout, the police department's public information officer.
A motive has not been established. Police have responded twice since April to the home for domestic violence reports. Both calls involved the son.
