Wednesday kicked off the 2012 Accenture Match Play Championship tournament in Marana with few unexpected upsets.
Last year's champion, England's Luke Donald, lost to South Africa's Ernie Els 5 and 4.
"I am not sure where to start," Donald said about his loss in a press conference after the tournament. "I just didn't play very well. It's disappointing. I've been working really hard. To lose control of the golf ball like I did today is really frustrating, but I believe the hard work will start paying off soon."
For other's, like Tiger Woods, it was a close match throughout the day as both him and his opponent Gonzalo Fdez-Castano struggled to string decent shots together.
On the 10th hole, both Woods and Fdez-Castano hit their balls into the desert.
"I hit a bad tee shot at 10," Woods said. "After all that, I still had a putt to halve a hole and I missed it. And then at 11, I was kind of right between clubs. I mean it's hard to convince myself when I have 272 to the hole and it's a smooth 3-iron, and I decided to take off the 5-wood and try to chip it down there and put it either in the bunker or left, so I would have an easy pitch up the hill. And I hit it too far, I hit 280."
