Man robs NW bank, leaves suspicious package Monday

On Monday morning, at about 10:30 a.m., The U.S. Bank inside the Safeway store at 9777 N. Thornydale Road was robbed.

After robbing the bank, the man left behind a package on the counter. The note the robber gave to the bank teller raised suspicions that the package might contain an explosive device.

The store was evacuated and the Pima Regional Bomb Squad responded to the scene.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Robbery/Assault Unit also responded and learned that a male suspect had approached the teller. He implied a gun and demanded money. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and then left the building, leaving behind the suspicious package.

The Pima Regional Bomb Squad investigated the package utilizing a robot. The package turned out to be a harmless item and did not contain any explosives.

The suspect was described as either Caucasian or possibly Oriental with a beard.

He is approximately 5’09” to 5’10” tall with a medium build. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a red University of Arizona baseball cap and green military-style jacket. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
