Kirkpatrick stresses the term "centrist', however, this term, along with the equally ambiguous term "blue dog Democrat," should be viewed in concrete terms. If a politician describes himself or herself as a centrist, an evaluation of the actual voting record will reveal whether this is true, or mere posturing. If Kirkpatrick votes with her Democratic colleagues more than 70-85 percent of the time in Congress, than she is no centrist. The bottom line for being a centrist is whether a politician actually votes with integrity and does not support the party line when conscience and facts show it is not in the country's interest. Being able to work across the aisle between parties in a true consensus and showing the courage to vote against your party for the good of the republic......that is being a centrist in reality, not just in self perception.
