On Jan. 11, Willcox High School lost not only a portion of its classrooms but the materials necessary to help instructors teach.

That day, a fire burned a portion of the school, leaving only tall piles with the charred remains of classroom desks, chairs and cabinets, and ashes. While no injuries were reported, the school’s math, science and special education classrooms, and the school resource office were destroyed.

As a result, Willcox Unified School District staff members need donations to replace teaching supplies and materials lost in the fire.

To help, a fund has been created by Willcox Against Substance Abuse, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

To encourage donations and boost the fund, Willcox-based greenhouse grower Eurofresh Farms will match every dollar donated up to $5,000.

As a nonprofit, WASA can accept donations targeted for support of losses from the fire. These donations are tax-deductible; WASA will provide receipts as requested.

Donations can be sent to: WASA, 480 N. Bisbee Ave., Willcox, AZ 85643. They also can be deposited directly to the WASA account at Cochise Credit Union or Compass Bank in Willcox. Checks should be made out to WASA with a notation that they are a donation for WHS Fire Recovery.

Willcox High School has educated area students for nearly a century. For more information, contact WASA Coordinator Sally White at (520) 384-4777 or WUSD Governing Board member Debra Ellis at (520) 384-4502.
