A bank robber who made his getaway in a taxi didn't rack up much cab fare. Deputies from the Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested the man while still a passenger in the cab shortly after attempting his getaway.

Christopher Fern, 45, was arrested in connection with the Oct. 5 bank robbery at the M&I Bank, 4380 N. Campbell Ave.

The PCSD believes Fern entered the bank just before 4 p.m., armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. The robber then forced customers to lay on the floor with their hands behind their heads.

According to information released by Deputy Dawn Barkman, public information officer for the sheriff's department, the suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Just after the robbery, Fern was seen getting into a cab, which was located in the 4400 block of East Broadway Boulevard.

At about 6:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies and Tucson police officers stopped the cab and found Fern inside. He was in possession of "multiple guns and a large amount of cash," according to Barkman, and taken into custody without incident.

Fern was charged with one count of armed robbery, six counts of aggravated assault and six counts of kidnapping, and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
