The weather may have been cold but spirits were warm and plentiful Feb. 5 when the Marana Chamber hosted its second annual Marana Can Do 5K and 1-mile stroll at Ora Mae Harn Park.

“By 8 a.m. the temperature was still in the 30s — it was freezing — yet we still had 352 participants cross the finish line and 45 vendor booths in the park. By the time it was over, it was a perfectly lovely day,” said event organizer Jolene Campbell.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Marana Community Food Bank. About 1,458 pounds of non-perishable food was collected from the entry fee of one bag of food. The public also donated $1,470 in food through a partnership with Sunflower Farmers Market. In addition, $480 in cash donations was collected at the event. Given the food bank’s ability to buy wholesale, the money will buy the equivalent of $5,000 in food, said food bank director Linda Hampton.

Also, any money left over after the event’s expenses have been paid will be given to the food bank, Campbell added.

In the end, everyone walked away a winner.

“They did something good for themselves and their bodies, and the event benefited the food bank. It was all for a good cause,” Campbell said.
