Volunteers from the Sonoran Desert Flyers helped wage war against problem vegetation Sept. 21 in the basin at Naranja Park. The men were led by John Schuering, a member of the Oro Valley Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Their targets were Russian thistle and buffelgrass. These non-native plants force out native Arizona grasses and add to fire danger.
Schuering is a licensed pesticide applicator and the volunteers, who are members of the radio-controlled model aircraft club, worked under his supervision.
Ainsley Legner, director of Oro Valley’s Parks, Recreation, Library & Cultural Resources department, and Lynanne Dellerman, manager of Oro Valley’s Recreation department, came by the field to congratulate the group on their good work and for helping out the community.
