The Oro Valley Town Council is taking its time to find a new town manager, and plans to keep Greg Caton in the interim position for at least a year.
Mayor Satish Hiremath said town officials are in the process of drawing up a contract with Caton that will likely be approved during the July 20 council meeting.
Caton was named interim town manager after Jerene Watson resigned from the position in June. Watson, after less than a year as the town manager, accepted a deputy town manager position in Flagstaff.
Caton was hired as the assistant town manager last November. He came to Oro Valley from Durango, Colo., where he had served as its assistant city manager.
Hiremath said the legal department and Caton are working on a contract that will also look at how much he will be paid for taking on the added responsibilities.
During the July 6 council meeting, the agenda called for discussions about the search for a new town manager; however, without a vote or discussion, Hiremath called for the meeting to be adjourned.
Hiremath later explained the council was following the advice of Town Attorney Tobin Rosen, who said if they weren’t going to take any action, they couldn’t discuss the details of the executive session held just before the start of the regular session.
Hiremath said the issue will be discussed in more detail during the July 20 meeting.
