Oro Valley students in three Amphitheater schools – Wilson K-8, and Painted Sky and Copper Creek elementary schools – were the beneficiaries of the Oro Valley Community Foundation Grant program, which provided funds for a summer Reading Boost Camp for students in upcoming grades 3, 4 and 6.

The RBC was held at Wilson K-8 from June 27 with parents and grandparents attending closing ceremonies on July 7.

The students attended the reading camp in Wilson K-8’s library and Aunt Bea’s Reading Room. Readers were actively engaged and completed two rounds and approximately three hours per day of Reading Boost Camp.

Activities included Camp Who Can, daily goal setting, singing to lyrics and music on the Smart Board with songbooks, quick fluency reading, poetry reading, leveled reading selections, two books completed on tape with student tracking, RAPID-leveled word reading, academic vocabulary games, and several fun brain breaks to keep the momentum at a high level.

Students donned red T-shirts and were awarded camouflage sashes with more than 20 awards for participation and goal achievement. Parents and students applauded the program, which fostered immediate reading improvement.
