Jazz legends

Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, Stripling was the animated singer. Person received the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance's eighth annual Oro Valley Legend of Jazz award for his blues, ballad and production work. "His soul is his sound, with his famous, magnificent, swinging jazz tenor," the award read. Al and Marilyn Cook arrange for the Jazz Legends show each year.

Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, More than 450 people enjoyed jazz, from the work of George Gershwin to gospel, on a fine evening Saturday, when Oro Valley had its 10th Jazz Legends concert at the Hilton El Conquistador. The players – keyboardist Bobby Floyd, trumpeter and vocalist Byron Stripling, bass player Jay Leonhart, saxophonist Houston Person, drummer Dennis Mackrel and trombonist John Fedchock – were reflected in the resort's pool.
