The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona has issued a warning against a new identity theft scheme.
Across the country, people have received unsolicited e-mails and phone calls from someone asking for Social Security or credit card numbers to verify their voter eligibility.
The caller claims to represent local election boards and other civic groups.
Voters in Pima County must only provide the last four digits of their Social Security number when filling out voter registration forms.
As a rule, organizations conducting legitimate voter registration drives will either contact voters in person or provide forms for voters to fill out, according to a BBB release.
Financial information is not needed to register to vote or check eligibility.
The BBB warns against providing any unsolicited personal information over the Internet or phone.

Report any suspicious calls or e-mails asking for private identification or financial information to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov, or call 877-382-4357.
Residents can also report potential scams to the BBB at 888-5353.
