A closed session is scheduled before the Oro Valley Town Council meeting this Wednesday, July 7.

The listed topic for the executive session on the council agenda is "discussion and consultation for legal advice regarding the Town Manager position."

The council had until recently intended to engage in a nationwide search for a permanent town manager after the departure of former Manager David Andrews, who resigned in September.

At the June 16 council meeting, as part of the fiscal 2011 budget approval, the council agreed to not pursue a contract with a company to search for a permanent town manager. Instead, the town would conduct its own search for a town manager, thereby saving $30,000 budgeted for the search.

Jerene Watson has served as acting town manager since Andrews' resignation. Watson was hired as assistant town manager in 2007.

On March 3, the council approved a measure to make the assistant town manager a permanent position.

The council also plans a discussion on enforcement of the town's temporary sign code. The code regulates the use of temporary signs like banners and other short-term signage.

The agenda item is designed to provide "temporary sign waivers to assist businesses and the real estate community in the current economic turndown," according to town documents.

Sings have been a topic of discussion in the town for several months. A task force was formed to confront some of the issues and present a plan of reform to update the entire sign code.

The current proposal would allow the use of approved temporary signs for up to 180 days.

Councilman Steve Solomon requested the change.

The council meets Wednesday, July 7 at 6 p.m. at Oro Valley Town Hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
