When they went out to align stakes for the new Twin Peaks Road, crews working for the Town of Marana found a drop site for illegal aliens just south of Dove Mountain Boulevard.
“Our construction staff thought they were the surveyor’s staff at first,” said Scott Leska, the town’s engineering division manager for capital improvement projects.
There were some two dozen individuals with ice chests, and they were hiding on the raw desert. “We knew we found a drop-off point,” said Morris Reyna, Marana’s construction division manager with the department of public works.
Federal authorities were notified.
“They thought we were crazy,” Leska said of the feds.
Fifteen minutes later, the feds called back, and soon armed Border Patrol showed up. Town staff members helped with apprehension. “They did not have enough to round them up,” Reyna said. “They said ‘hold them at bay.’”
“It was a wild time,” Leska said.
