A Northwest doctor last week was indicted on four counts of prescription drug fraud, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Melanie L. McCarty, an eye surgeon, had been under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency for allegedly writing illegal prescriptions for Lunesta, a sleep aid, and for Phentermine, an appetite suppressant.

The doctor allegedly wrote prescriptions for a non-existent patient and then had them filled at local pharmacies.
