Marana has narrowed a field of police chief applicants from 93 to nine, Town Manager Gilbert Davidson reports.
Following deeper background checks, consultant Waters Consulting Group of Texas is expected to forward six names to the town this week, according to Suzanne Machain, Marana's director of human resources. Representatives of Waters told Machain said it's "highly likely a few may fall out" after more intensive inquiry.
All 93 applicants are men, said Davidson.
"It's a large number of people to apply for a high-level public safety position," he noted. "It's amazing how many people right now are applying for jobs."
"I felt very positive about that," Machain said. "I was excited we had such a great interest."
From the 93, Waters Consulting trimmed the field to 17. An internal Marana group, including Davidson, Machain, employee relations employee Ann Berkman and Kevin Kish, general manager of development services, agreed upon nine candidates.
The "top five or six" will begin the next process, identified as "pretty involved" and including interactions with the town council, the police commission, police department employees as well as representatives of the Marana Police Officers Association, town department heads and others. Davidson anticipates different community forums and roundtables for the finalists.
"Those candidates are going to go through a pretty thorough review, and exposure to our community," Davidson said. "There's a whole series of things they're going to be doing."
Machain expects Davidson would interview two or three finalists before making his selection. The position is Davidson's to fill, Machain said.
Davidson expects to name a successor to Chief Terry Tometich by the end of November.
He plans to find "the right fit … to continue to lead this department. … It will be the right person."
The town is also seeking an assistant town manager to replace Deb Thalisitis, who left town employment in October. The search is similar to that of the chief, "perhaps less interactive" with the community, Davidson said. The plan is to make an offer to a candidate in mid-December. More than 90 people have applied for that position, Machain said.
