A candidate has stepped into the Oro Valley mayor's race, though the election is more than year away.
Local dentist Satish Hiremath last week made his plans known.
Mayor Paul Loomis has not yet said whether he would seek re-election in 2010.
"It’s been a long time coming," said Hiremath, who's lived in Oro Valley since 1990.
The May 2008 election shook up the council, Hiremath said, prompting him to act.
"To see the state of affairs in Oro Valley, I felt I could get things back on track," he said.
Hiremath said he wants to see government work for the betterment of all residents of Oro Valley, not protect the interests of a select few.
"It’s about each segment of society," he said.
Hiremath is board president of the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council. His term ends in July.
The town council primary election will be held on March 10, 2010.
The general election will be held May 18, 2010.
Candidate packets will be available beginning Sept. 7, at Oro Valley town hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
Candidates can begin to turn in their completed packets on Nov. 9.
Packets must be received no later than Dec. 9.
