Earlier this month, the Marana Unified School District governing board hired Doug Wilson, a school administrator from Colorado, as the district’s next superintendent.

Wilson will take over July 1, replacing outgoing superintendent Dennis Dearden, who held the position since 2005.

Previously, Wilson was assistant superintendent of human resources Pueblo City Schools in Pueblo, Colo., and superintendent of Agua Fria Union High School in Avondale, Ariz.

What sort of plans do you have for Marana schools?

The first thing I want to do is to spend some time getting to know everybody in the community. I know that the district has really gone through some positive changes over the last three years, and what I want to do is listen to folks on what the strengths are and how to keep things going.

How has your current job prepared you for the new role?

The district I’m in right now is about 18,000 (students), and I’m dealing with 1,700-1,800 employees. My job prior to that as superintendent of Agua Fria prepared me for more the big picture stuff.

What were the big issues at your past two districts?

Growth was a real issue for us at Agua Fria. We were growing 18 to 20 percent a year, and we were trying to make sure we kept ahead of the growth. In Pueblo this year … we were trying to improve the morale of the staff.

Do you foresee similar issues in Marana?

Growth will most certainly be an issue in the district as the economic situation starts to turn, because there’s enough development that I think we’ll see.
