The Oro Valley community has shown strong interest in filling the town council seat Salette Latas vacated in April.
The council opened the position to applicants from May 1 to May 19. During that time, 19 people applied to fill the seat.
The council plans a vote to appoint the new council member at its Wednesday, June 2 meeting. The new member would serve out the remainder of Latas' term, which expires in 2012.
Among the applicants are outgoing Mayor Paul Loomis and Councilman K.C. Carter. Former Councilwoman Helen Dankwerth also applied for position, as did current interim Councilwoman Pat Spoerl. Spoerl was appointed in November to fulfill the term of Councilwoman Paula Abbott, who resigned before the expiration of her second term. Spoerl's interim appointment ends on June 2.
Amphitheater Unified School District Governing Board President Jeff Grant also turned in an application.
Latas was the third council member to resign in less than six months. The council appointed Mary Snider to fulfill the term of Al Kunisch, which expires June 2. Snider won a seat on the council in the March primary; her term in office begins on June 2.
The Oro Valley Town Council meets the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
