A federal judge in Phoenix has sentenced a former corrections officer to two years in prison for attempting to provide an inmate with illegal narcotics.
U.S. District Judge Roslyn O. Silver pronounced the sentence against Juan Nunez, 41, of Coolidge, who worked as a guard at a contract federal prison facility operated by Corrections Corporation of America in Florence.
Nunez was working as a corrections officer from Oct. 30, 2008 through Nov. 6, 2008, when he was arrested for accepting a half-ounce of cocaine from an undercover FBI agent that he was supposed to provide to an inmate of the prison.
He also took $1,600 in cash to deliver the drugs. He was arrested after he exited the agent's car.
Nunez pleaded guilty on April 10, 2010, of attempting to furnish an inmate with contraband. In addition to his two-year sentence, Nunez will be required to perform 100 hours of court-supervised community service.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Marana Police Department, the Tucson Police Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office worked in cooperation during the investigation.
