A pilot was killed over the weekend when his self-built plane crashed in Avra Valley last Sunday.
Gerald Van Heeswyk, 67, was flying west of the Marana Regional Airport on June 1 when his plane turned and dove into the ground on the 18000 block of West Avra Valley Road at 8:16 a.m., according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokewoman Dawn Hanke.
Van Heeswyk was the sole occupant and the only person harmed in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His plane was based out of Ryan Airfield.
