In anticipation of “expected reductions in state appropriations,” Pima Community College is taking steps to reduce spending, chancellor Dr. Roy Flores said in a Monday release.
Effective immediately, the college plans to reduce administrative overhead, put a hold on all discretionary spending, eliminate non-critical travel, and institute a hiring freeze for all staff and administrative positions, Flores said.
The hiring freeze does not apply to campus police positions, grant- and contract-funded positions, or faculty positions.
Recommendations for other exceptions to the hiring freeze will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The college will also take measures to increase debt collection.
“It is prudent for us to begin taking measures in anticipation of reductions,” Flores said. “We will continue to monitor the economy and re-evaluate the situation when budget bills are introduced during the legislative session.
“I want to reassure the students and the community that the highest priority will be given to activities related to instruction and student success,” Flores continued. “It is important to note that despite any budget setbacks, we will continue to improve services and provide responsible stewardship.”
PCC offers more than 180 transfer and occupational programs on six campuses, including the Northwest Campus off Shannon Road.
