Students from a Northwest school are leading Arizona entries in the Math League’s national math competition, and rank 11th nationally.
In addition, Sonoran Science Academy has two students in the top 22 nationally, a release from the school indicates. Individually, Richard Spence has a total cumulative score of 23 out of a possible 24, and Langston Harris has a cumulative total of 22 out of 24. Both are freshmen.
The Math League-sponsored competition is a series of six monthly tests given to more than 1 million high school students. Each month, individual scores and a team score composed of a school’s top five students are reported to the Math League.
After four months of testing, Sonoran Science Academy students have the highest cumulative score 102 of a possible 120 points, among 18 Arizona high schools.
Contest questions are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge at the high school level, and vary in difficulty from “fairly simple to devilishly challenging,” a school release said.
