Sheep water in the Watermans

photo courtesy Arizona Game and Fish Department, After a helicopter transported it, Arizona Game and Fish Department workers and Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society volunteers secure a new game tank for bighorn sheep in a remote area of the Waterman Mountains west of Marana. Up to 11 bighorn sheep were counted in October in the Watermans, which are within the Ironwood Forest National Monument. There may have been up to three yearlings, meaning a herd is establishing itself there, the Game and Fish said. The original Waterman catchment, built in 2008, needed repair, and was replenished by airlift of water in June and July to ensure that enough was available for the bighorn sheep, birds and other small mammals that use it until the summer monsoon rains arrived and a new tank could be put in place.
