Snakes put heat on firefighters

Posted: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 11:00 pm

Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, Golder Ranch firefighter paramedic Jason Rivera places a rattlesnake in a containment bucket on one of the department's many snake calls. During the summer months, fire departments can receive, on average, 125 snake-related calls per week. With all the calls, only a handful of them are for actual bites and more than 90 percent of those bites could have been avoided by not attempting to move the snake.
