It was definitely one of the more memorable weekends to be an Arizona sports fan. Between the Arizona Wildcat football team, basketball team, and even the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona sports prevailed in all of their match-ups.

It all started in New Mexico for the Gildan New Mexico Bowl against the Nevada Wolf Pack. After quickly falling behind by three touchdowns in the first quarter, Arizona responded by tying the game early in the second quarter.

Despite a 17-point defecit entering the fourth quarter, the Wildcats outscored Nevada 21-3; including two touchdowns within 27 seconds of each other. Finally, with 19 seconds remaining, Arizona put the extra-point kick through the uprights to win the Gildan New Mexico Bowl to conclude head coach, Rich Rodriquez’s first year.

In addition, sophomore running back and Canyon Del Oro graduate, Ka’Deem Carey, finished his remarkable season as the best running back in all of college football. He finished with 1,929 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Shortly after the Wildcats football victory in New Mexico, the Wildcats basketball team took the court at McKale Memorial Center against No. 5 Florida in what was arguably the biggest and most important basketball game of the season. Both teams entered the game with a perfect 7-0 record.

Although the Florida Gators maintained the lead for the majority of the game; all but 77 seconds early in the first half to be exact, the Wildcats prevailed with a game-winning shot from nearly five feet away from the hoop. The result of senior guard, Mark Lyons bank-shot with seven seconds remaining was another Wildcat win, 65-64, and an untarnished 8-0 record as McKale Center erupted.

To top it all off and nearly make this weekend a holiday in Arizona, the Arizona Cardinals who had lost their last nine games, broke their streak by beating the Detroit Lions, 38-10.

Whether it be the rainy weather or the holiday spirit, there is something in the air here in Arizona that has caused a winning spree for Arizona sports.
