Struggling with who to vote for is understandable
Posted: May 16, 2012 - 4:00 am

When it comes to the special election to replace retired Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Congressional District 8, I’ve heard a couple statements that have got me to thinking. First, a SaddleBrooke resident told me after reading some political statements having to do with the CD8 race between Ron Barber and Jesse Kelly, “Thelma, I don’t know who to believe.” She keeps up with current events, is responsible in voting and is a good citizen, and yet, she’s put in this position of not knowing who is telling the truth anymore. Her problem is not uncommon, as many voters see the television ads, hear the radio shows, the rhetoric, the back and forth politicking, and they wonder if what they are hearing is the truth.

What did the Arizona Legislature really get done in the 2012 session?
Updated: May 15, 2012 - 3:56 pm

The only reasonable conclusion I can draw from the legislative session that just ended is this: Republican legislators think nothing is more important to Arizona than teaching the Bible in public schools and restricting women’s access to contraception and abortion. Jobs? Education? The economy? Not nearly as important.

Drug testing and state aid
Posted: May 16, 2012 - 4:00 am

Many states, including Arizona, have been trying to institute drug testing for individuals applying for welfare and/or unemployment benefits. Who could object to that?  Employers today commonly require drug testing for employees. Why shouldn’t the state? I personally have had to be drug tested for jobs in the past, as I am sure you have. Even though I am not now nor have I ever been a drug user, that did not matter. All employees and prospective employees had to experience the inconvenience of the drug test. This was the new normal.

Reports of teachers with students are too common
Updated: May 09, 2012 - 12:56 pm

So far in 2012, there have been three teachers arrested in the Tucson region for sexual misconduct with minors/students. Two of those teachers are from the Amphitheater School District, and one from Flowing Wells for alleged relations with a student in the Tucson Unified School District. While the details of each case are bad enough, the sad part of the news is that people are becoming used to it. It’s getting to a point where a teacher having sex with a student isn’t as shocking as it once was.

Is there a War against Women?
Updated: May 01, 2012 - 2:07 pm

There’s been a lot of talk in the last few months about whether or not the Arizona Legislature has waged war against women. While some shake their heads in disbelief, saying the idea is preposterous, some of us are scratching our heads thinking it may just be happening right before our eyes. As each new bill is approved, or new idea comes from our lawmakers, I ask myself if our gender is taking a giant step backward, rather than leaping forward?

There are two factual inaccuracies in Mr. Franzi’s column that I would like to address:

Character does count

Character is essentially about saying and doing the right things. Far too often we see politicians failing in both areas.

Leal Ease- Take some time to avoid estate taxes
Posted: May 02, 2012 - 4:00 am

The last thing anyone wants is to pay taxes.  We have all just gone through another, sometimes grueling preparation of our 2012 Federal and State Tax Returns, which is what brought this subject to mind.

OMG – Smurfberries cost money?

There are some parents in this world who aren’t happy about the products being provided by Apple through their Apps program. They are so unhappy in fact, that they felt the need to file a lawsuit.

What makes my mom the best
Updated: April 17, 2012 - 5:10 pm

Next month we will be celebrating our mothers. On Mother’s Day we thank them for raising us, caring for us and being there for us with gifts, hugs and sometimes tears. This year, instead of just telling mom how great she is in person, The Explorer is looking for you to tell thousands of people just how you feel about your mom. Through the “What makes your mom great?” contest, we are taking essays and will be handing out prizes for that special day.

The “Chock full o’ Crazy” folder

The Obama Derangement Syndrome is as strong today as it was when Obama first became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008. Examples pop up in my email on a regular basis. I keep them in my “Chock full o’ Crazy” folder.

Disturbing trend in our politicians
Posted: April 11, 2012 - 4:00 am

Over the last year, it’s becoming more and more alarming to see how some politicians are “serving constituents” in Congress, and the Arizona Legislature. I am not talking about the bills being passed, even though there are plenty of them that are just ridiculous. No, I am talking about behavior.

The high cost of medical care
Updated: April 10, 2012 - 5:07 pm

I am not completely sure where I stand on the issue of government-controlled health insurance. Being a senior citizen, and a veteran, most of my healthcare needs are taken care of by the government. Since I have a military service connected disability, I receive even more complete coverage, and the VA does an excellent job of taking care of me. Let me share with you an experience, which caused me some concern however.

Nuclear Options
Posted: April 11, 2012 - 4:00 am

On March 26, a conversation between President Obama and Russian President Medvedev was inadvertently captured by a live microphone; Obama, discussing missile defense, begged for “space,” and promised the Russian leader “flexibility” on the issue until after his re-election fight. Though certainly not intended for public consumption, these comments were no accidental slip; they are entirely consistent with the president’s larger objective of a world without nuclear weapons.

Legal Ease - Legal forms: Don’t do them all by yourself
Updated: April 11, 2012 - 8:29 am

Boilerplate wills and trust documents that can be purchased online, or in stores are not geared toward anyone’s specific circumstances. You are not a boilerplate person and your circumstances are not boilerplate. The boilerplate forms rarely take into consideration the variances in your life, which can include spouses and ex-spouses, or significant others, children, personal property, real property, businesses, other assets, inheritances, and much more.

A break down of Brewer’s vetoes
Posted: April 04, 2012 - 4:00 am

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed several bills last week, some of them made sense, and others made no sense whatsoever. Of course, these kinds of decisions are becoming common for Brewer, we are sometimes excited by her decision-making, and other times we are left scratching our heads.

The four GOP candidates running April 17 in Arizona Congressional District 8, and later in the new CD2, are solid people. Hopefully, Republicans elsewhere are fielding others as impressive.

You can’t have that because I said so
Posted: March 28, 2012 - 4:00 am

I never thought the day would come when we’d walk into a pharmacy with a valid, doctor written prescription and have it summarily denied as a necessary medication “just because.” In the good old days which were most likely the last time you filled a prescription, the only qualifiers for securing your physician written prescription were a current insurance card, a fistful of cash or an approved credit or debit card. What went wrong with the system?

For some reason I am continually surprised by the nonsense being passed as bills through our Arizona Legislature. It seems with every stupid law, I think wow, and can they get any more ridiculous? And then, well another bill is passed through for approval.

Between good and evil
Posted: March 21, 2012 - 4:00 am

“Don’t be evil.” That’s Google’s unofficial motto, adopted when it was young and idealistic. But now Google is all grown up, and it’s willing to do whatever it takes to boost corporate profits. Among its questionable practices: tracking our every move on the web to boost its “targeted ad” revenues, even overriding security measures people set up to protect themselves from unwanted invasion of privacy.
