Successful movies call for sequels, and successful sequels often call for trilogies and series. We, as consumers and film viewers, have literally watched as this trend of “sequelism” has grown in the movie industry for decades, often to our delight. There is no denying the success of many film sequels and series, old and new. From “Star Trek” to “Shrek,” film series can delight millions. There is, however, a new trend growing in the film industry that takes the sequel to a whole new level – the concept of “universe building”. Creating a series of interconnected movies and projects in the same fictional universe has been a common practice in the sci-fi and fantasy industries; “Star Trek” has been a universe that is constantly expanding and changing through multiple mediums since 1966. Superheroes have received similar treatment more recently to great success in both quality of a product and box office numbers. It now seems that the “universe building” trend has begun spread to the horror industry.

Making a television program is quite a daunting task. Collecting and assembling all of the moving pieces that go into broadcasting a television show would be an overwhelming task for many of the most organized people. Throw in doing it every single week and you have a recipe for insanity.

In the midst of another outbreak of war, it becomes increasingly difficult to find events with no political affiliation or tie-in. While I am in no way saying that news of the ongoing developments with Syria is unimportant, sometimes you need to get your mind off of things.

The summer has unleashed its terrible fury upon Tucson for a few weeks now and the end of the sweltering heat is nowhere in sight. There is more to the Arizona summer, though. The online streaming industry is growing and growing every year. Standing at the forefront of this online explosion is Netflix, the well known provider of both online streaming of thousands of different programs ranging from movies, to T.V. shows, and documentaries as well as in home, through the mail deliveries of their content. Netflix began the road to online kingship back in 1997, when the company began as a traditional through the mail provider. By 1999 the company had introduced a monthly subscription policy and now operates on both monthly payment and unlimited online streaming. Over the past decade or so, Netflix has found its way into the homes of many families, college students, and anyone else who enjoys video entertainment. Netflix has been able to stand amongst the forefront of much of the development of the in-home and delivery movie craze, but this rise to the top has not been one without trials and setbacks.
