If Derek Daly can make it in New York, he can make it anywhere.

The 10-year-old Coronado Little Leaguer made the final cut for Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition — earning a national showcase for his budding skills during All-Star weekend.

Daly scored first among his age bracket during the competition’s state-level round at Chase Field, on June 1. The event pitted local Pitch, Hit and Run winners from across Arizona and New Mexico, after they advanced from their hometown diamonds.

Three kids in each of the four age groups were selected, based on their performance, from the nationwide pool of state winners.

Those 12 youths, along with a parent, receive an all-expenses paid tour of New York City, including receptions and fanfare during July 13-15. After competing in their finals, Daly and company will shag major league fly balls during the Home Run Derby Contest, before the Pitch, Hit and Run champions are announced.

The Painted Sky Elementary fifth-grader pitched for Coronado’s Triple-A White Sox this year, netting himself a spot on his division’s All-Star team.
