Ironwood Ridge's wrestling Nighthawks placed 13th among 92 U.S. high schools at the Reno Tournament of Champions last weekend in Nevada.
Several Nighthawks had strong finishes.
Scott Filbert, Ironwood's 130-pounder who's bound for West Point, was second in a tough weight class; the country's eighth-ranked wrestler was third in that division.
At 103 pounds, Trevor Willson finished sixth, losing three one-point matches, including an overtime loss in the quarterfinals to an eventual finalist.
Kyle Webb also finished sixth at 130 pounds, battling a knee "that popped out of place at least once a match," forcing injury time-outs. "He showed a lot of guts," assistant coach Jeff Hannan said.
After the holidays, Ironwood Ridge wrestles Cibola Jan. 6 in Yuma, goes to Marana Jan. 13, then participates in the Flowing Wells tournament Jan. 15 and 16.
