Help needed for annual bicycle count

Volunteers are needed for Tucson's third annual regional bicycle count, which takes place Oct. 19-21.

The count, which is coordinated by Pima Association of Governments, "is important to the region to better understand the trends in cycling, the behavior of cyclists, and to identify locations needing improvements," a release said.

Last year, staff and volunteers counted more than 9,800 cyclists at 99 locations.

Volunteers are needed. They must attend a short training session to learn more about the count. Training sessions will be at the Tucson City Council Ward VI Office at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 and at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16.

Volunteers sign up for one location and count one morning (7-9 a.m.) and one evening count (4-6 p.m.). The morning and afternoon counts do not have to be on the same day. Volunteers can pair up with a friend to split the counts.

PAG collects different attributes with the count (gender, approximate age, helmet use, etc.).

An informational flier is available at http://www.pagnet.org/Programs/TransportationPlanning/BikePedestrians/tabid/486/Default.aspx under the heading, 2010 Bike Count Info.

Volunteers may contact Ann Chanecka, PAG transportation planner, at 792-1093 or achanecka@pagnet.org for more information or questions.

Three OV young shooters at national event

Three young marksmen from Oro Valley are taking aim Oct. 9-16 at the 2010 Smith & Wesson USPSA National Handgun Championships in Las Vegas.

Among the more than 580 shooters in the event are Eric France, John France and Michael France of Oro Valley.

The matches are run by the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. Competitors face 18 stages, or courses of fire, designed to test the competitors' speed and accuracy using multiple targets, including moving targets that swing, bob and appear briefly before quickly disappearing again.

An estimated 250,000 rounds of ammunition will be put down range at the event.
