A large trophy — but no cash — awaits 11-year-old golfer Frankie Wu upon winning San Diego’s Callaway Junior World Championship, from July 15 to19.

“I’m a little bit nervous,” admits Wu, who averages 230-yard drives during two- to three-hour daily practices at the Hilton El Conquistador Country Club.

Wu qualified third at the Arizona Junior World Championship in Phoenix on June 17 and 18 to qualify for the California tournament. Next came the U.S. Kids World Cup Arizona qualifier, on June 29.

Wu started the front nine holes four strokes behind the leader, in 110-degree heat without a practice round. After finishing 18 holes, Wu won by six strokes.

“The players were tough. On the second day, I just played well, and did my best,” said Wu.

Under the tutelage of Wu’s father, Robert, the youngster remains a force to be reckoned with in his age group.

Frankie juggles the idea of turning pro someday with a career in pediatrics. But Robert hopes golf will teach his son to be independent in any field.

“I just want him to concentrate good enough to do everything by himself,” Robert said.
