The Pima Community College baseball team (11-12-1, 8-6 in conference) swept Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday at the West Campus as part of a make-up doubleheader.
Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) had everything working once again as he threw his third straight shutout in Pima’ 12-0 win in the first game. Zuniga hasn’t given up a run in 21 innings and one run in his last 29. He improved his record to 5-0 on the season after giving up six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks on 83 pitches. Bryant Muñoz (Tucson Magnet HS), Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) and Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS) each hit an RBI single as part of Pima’s four-run 2nd inning. Arvizu hit a second RBI single in the 5th inning to make it 11-0. Muñoz went 2 for 4 with two runs scored while Beyersdorf finished 2 for 3 with a run scored. Kyle Becerra (Marcos de Niza HS) finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and run scored and a double.
The second game was a different story but the Aztecs pulled it out in the end after Carlo Tacchia (Sunnyside HS) hit a walk-off single to bring in Beyersdorf as the Aztecs won 6-5. Down 5-4 going into the bottom of the 9th inning, Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS) led off the inning with a singleand with two outs, Beyersdorf hit an RBI triple towards right field to tie the game at 5-5 which set up Tacchia’s game-winning hit. Tied at 2-2, Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) hit a groundout that scored Beyersdorf to put Pima up 3-2. Then Sergio Ortiz hit an RBI double to put the Aztecs up 4-2. Paradise Valley scored three runs in the top of the 9th to make it 5-4. Hyrum Formo (Hayden HS) pitched seven innings giving up two runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Santiago Romero (Sunnyside HS) got the win and improved to 2-1 on the year.
The Aztecs will be competing in the Jack Howell Classic at the West Campus. Their first game is Wednesday against Grays Harbor College (WA.) at 3:45 p.m.
