When the Arizona high school soccer playoffs began last week, the girls teams from Canyon Del Oro, Marana, Mountain View, Ironwood Ridge and Pusch Ridge had all earned berths.

By week's end, the Mountain View Mountain Lions were the lone team standing.

Mountain View, seeded fifth in its class, won twice last eek, earning the right to play #9 Scottsdale Desert Mountain this Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix.

The Mountain Lions opened up with an easy 5-0 win over Surprise Willow Canyon. Justene Kesterson scored two goals. The biggest surprise was that goalie / forward Christine Posvistak, who had five saves in the game, also scored a goal in the 77th minute. The Mountain Lions also dominated in shots on goal by a 21-5 margin.

Mountain View's second match was much more challenging, as it required double overtime before edging Scottsdale Chaparral 3-2. Kesterson scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute on a pass from Elena Whitten. Kesterson had two goals and assisted on the other one, while Whitten had two assists for the Mountain Lions.

Marana entered as a #10 seed, and defeated Raymond S. Kellis 3-0 in its first-round game.

Jessi Koeppen scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute on an assist from Ashley Willoughby. Willoughby and Catlin Ward also added goals in the victory.

In the second round, the Tigers ran into second-seeded Cave Creek Cactus Shadows and were eliminated, 2-0.

In 2A play, the Pusch Ridge Christian Lions seemed poised to make a strong run in the AIA playoffs. They entered the bracket as the #2 seed after winning their last 13 games in a row. Chelsea Ruland led all scorers in Southern Arizona with 41 goals during the season. The Lions were given a first-round bye, but on Saturday, after being idle for six days, the Lions were eliminated by Phoenix Northwest Christian 2-1, a team they had beaten earlier in the year 1-0. Caroline Herrera scored the Lions only goal.

Fourth-ranked Ironwood Ridge lost to Scottsdale Chaparral 1-0, while the CDO Dorados, ranked #13, lost to Sahuaro in their first-round game.

In boys soccer, the top-ranked 2A Pusch Ridge Christian Lions won a couple of games to advance to the semifinals. Pusch Ridge plays rival Stafford on Friday at 5 p.m. at Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix.

The Lions defeated Tanque Verde, 1-0 in first-round action. Mitch Woody scored in the 19th minute on Frank Parker's assist. They outshot their opponents 14-3.

In the second-round, the Lions defeated Scottsdale Christian, 1-0. Chad Springetti scored the lone goal in the 11th minute on an assist from Woody. The win streak for Pusch Ridge is now at 20.

Ironwood Ridge lost its first-round game to Goodyear Millenium, 8-2 to end the season.
