Five high school football standouts from the Northwest were honored for their achievements in the classroom and on the football field by the Southern Arizona Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.
They were among 10 seniors from Southern Arizona recognized at a March 28 scholar / athlete awards dinner.
From the Northwest, recognition was given to Del Bogart, Mountain View High School; Adrian Brahler, Ironwood Ridge High School; Ryan Polston and Greg Schimke of Pusch Ridge Christian Academy; and Jared Tevis of Canyon Del Oro High School.
Youth football player Tyler Berson of the Oro Valley Dolphins and Wilson K-8 was also honored.
Others honored were Jordan Christenson, Cienega; Sean Craig, Salpointe Catholic; John Elliott, Casa Grande Union; Ryan Fischella, Palo Verde; Brandon Kuhn, Amphitheater; Corey Hall, University of Arizona, and Mitchell Sluder, Sahuaro, winner of the Tedy Bruschi Special Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Applicants are judged 40 percent on academics, 40 percent on athletics and 20 percent on character, citizenship and service. The chapter has awarded more than $120,000 in scholarship grants to 144 scholar / athletes, as well as $2,500 to youth football programs in greater Tucson.
Bruschi, the retired University of Arizona stalwart and Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, addressed the gathering.
