The Ironwood Ridge High School tennis team dominated at 5A Division II State Championships earlier this month.

In Division II Doubles play, the boys’ team brought home both the state championship and the second-place trophy.

Brothers Alec Petford and Cody Petford were crowned state champions, defeating teammates Josh Taylor and Connor Spiegel.

Out of 128 competitors, Taylor said he wasn’t surprised to see teammates on the other side of the net in the championship round because of the level of talent on the team.

“It was great to go out as a senior playing a big match against teammates,” he said.

Spiegel agreed, calling it a great experience.

The girls’ team finished third overall in the competition that ended May 2.

In girls’ doubles, Marissa Baca and Katrina Domingo went into competition seeded number one out of 128 competitors, and finished in second place.

In the championship round against Foothills, the girls faced tough competition. Baca and Domingo lost the first set, and were leading in the second set with eyes set on a third tiebreaker match.

Coach William Little called the match a “nail-biter,” with Foothills coming away with the first-place victory.

“It was a great season,” said Baca. “We were that close to the title, making a third set. We played really well. They just played better.”

Despite taking second, Domingo said the championship match was by far “the best” of the season.

Little said he is proud of both Baca and Domingo, who are both high achievers not only on the court but also academically.

It was Baca’s second year on the team, while Domingo competed in her first season.
