Canyon Del Oro High School had a good showing at its newly-revived Youth Football Camp, which ran from June 4 to June 6.

The program, which came to a halt about 10 years ago, is back again, and will likely continue for years to come, according to CDO football head coach, Dustin Peace.

“The goal is to excite our community with football and athletics in general, and getting kids off the couch and moving,” said Peace. “If we can provide excitement about athletics in any way, I think it will definitely benefit our community.”

In total, 34 kids showed up for the camp, most of which are junior high students who will be attending CDO within the next year or two. Peace said he expects the attendance to double next year.

Seventh grader AJ Vanbogaert of Cross Middle School said the camp aligns with his love of football, and hopes it will help him prepare for the CDO football team.

“I want to be a starting linebacker for CDO my freshman year,” he said. “This is helping me get the experience I need.”

Current CDO football player Jared McElmell agreed the camp offers benefits to those who hope to play high school football in the coming years.

“It’s nice, because this camp gives them the chance to figure out what we do as a school, and as a team, and when they come up here as freshman, they won’t be as lost,” said McElmell. “It gives them a good sense of what we do at CDO. I wish it had been available before my freshman year.”

The camp develops basic football skills, such as blocking, tackling, catching and passing, and allows the participants to put those skills to use in a friendly scrimmage.

Peace said he will continue to recruit current and former players to participate in the camp, and is hoping to acquire former CDO football star, and current New Orleans Saint Aaron Tevis for future camps.
