Give Brittany West any breathing room behind the arc and you will regret it. A senior guard on the Canyon Del Oro High School girls’ basketball team, West tied the Arizona state record and broke the school’s record for most three-point shots made in a game.

“I was happy I broke it and very proud of myself after all these years of hard work,” said West. “It shows that it paid off.”

West took her spot on the CDO varsity line up her junior year after making a transition from the cold of Wisconsin to the warm weather of Tucson. It didn’t take long for West’s quickness and shooting abilities to be noticed. Kent Senzee, last season’s head coach, said West used her athleticism and skill to lead the team.

“She is a very good player and our go-to shooter,” said Senzee. “Whenever we needed points we went to her. She won a few games for us by shooting three’s.”

West averaged 16.3 points per game and shot 77 percent from the free throw line. For the season, she made a total of 69 three-point shots.

The record-breaking night for West came against Cholla High Magnet School where she drained nine three-point shots, leaving her with a total of 33 points to finish out the game. The school’s three-point record was six and the state record was nine. Fortunately for West, the head coach of the Pima Community College women’s basketball team was sitting in the stands when it happened. After such a solid shooting performance, Pima coach Todd Holthaus offered West a full-ride scholarship immediately.

“He came to a lot of games before but that night he said that how can he not offer me something after making all those three’s,” said West. “He said that the six words he needs to hear that makes me verbally commit is, ‘I want to be an Aztec.’ I talked to my parents then called him that night and told him.”

Although West had other offers from Division III schools, she decided to go with Pima because Holthaus offered her a full-ride scholarship and it was close to her family and friends. Now that her high-school career is over, West looks forward to playing for Pima where she hopes to use her shooting as an offensive weapon for the Aztec team.
