The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (0-1) opened up a lead in the first half but couldn’t close the game out in the second half against Los Angeles College Prep. The Aztecs lost 79-78 on Monday in their regular season home opener at the West Campus.
The Aztecs fell behind early in the first half but went on a 19-0 run late to take a 43-34 lead at halftime. Cameron Volk (Tucson Magnet HS) went on a tear scoring 20 points in the opening half. He finished with a game-high 27 points.
Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS) scored the first six points of the second half but LA College Prep hit its three-pointers to get back into the game. Down 73-67 with 2:45 left in the game, Volk hit a three-pointer and a jumper to cut LA College’s lead to 73-72. LA College hit six free throws down the stretch to keep a tight hold on its lead. Bryan Cervantes (Nogales HS) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but it wasn’t enough.
LA College Prep hit all 11 of its free throws in the second half and finished 15 for 16 for the game.
Gershman finished the game with 19 points and seven rebounds. Kendrick Little hit 3 three-pointers in the game and finished with 11 points. Andres Marquez (Nogales HS) had six assists.
The Aztecs will play in Odessa, TX on Friday and Saturday. They’ll play the New Mexico Military Institute on Friday at 5 p.m.
