The nation’s leading NCAA rusher, Ka’Deem Carey, is earning attention for more than his on-the-field accomplishments, being served a protective order on Jan. 2.

Carey, a Canyon Del Oro graduate, was served, and signed for the protective order, but was not placed under arrest.

The order was issued by a Tucson Municipal Court judge on Dec. 26.

University of Arizona athletic officials said they are aware of the ongoing issues involving the NCAA rushing champion. However, both UA athletic director Greg Byrne, and Head Football Coach Rich Rodriguez said it is a police matter.

“I’ve spoken with Ka’Deem and am aware of the case,” said Rodriguez in a statement. “We take these matters very seriously and will support the authorities however we can. Once more specific information is available, we will act accordingly.”

Byrne said, “This is now a matter for the local authorities and we will fully cooperate and assist them as needed. At this point, we will have no further comment.”

At 5-feet, 10 inches, and 203 pounds, Carey gained national attention after the 2012 football season, leading the NCAA in rushing yards, including a career high 366 yards against Colorado on Nov. 10.
