There was no absence of emotion for Mt. View High School senior, Bailey Janis, who took home his second state wrestling title on Feb. 8 at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott.

“Once I won I just remember feeling the goose bumps come and then I just screamed with excitement,” said Janis. “It was still emotional for me even though it was the second time because it was another obstacle that I was able to overcome.”

Obstacle is one word that Janis is not unfamiliar with as he went through losing his father at age seven and cutting off ties with his mother. For Janis, wrestling is just one more challenge to overcome.

“All that happened with my father and my mother just motivates me in wrestling because if I can overcome that then I can overcome this,” said Janis.

Starting wrestling in eighth grade, Janis knew at an early age that he was gifted in the sport.  This became especially evident his freshmen year of high school where he took fifth in state for Mt. View and went on to take first in state his junior and now senior year.  Janis says that one contributing factor to his success is the Mt. View coaching staff.

“There’s been this coaching staff for the last two years and one thing that sticks out the most is that they taught our team to be disciplined,” said Janis. “That helped a lot because teams knew we were tough, but the discipline part of it wasn’t all there.  Obviously, they (coaching staff) helped because I won state twice.”

Janis’ overall record in his high school wrestling career was 170-20.  His final match in the state tournament was against James Zuckerman from Raymond Kellis High School in Glendale, where he won 8-4.

Although he finished his high school career with a state championship, Janis’ career is far from over.  He plans to wrestle in college, but is undecided as to where.  He hopes to pursue a degree in either fire science or pre-nursing.
