Claud Smith looked away for only a moment, but in doing so, missed seeing his first-ever hole-in-one dropped into the cup.

On June 30, Smith, 61, was playing his usual Thursday morning round of golf at Pusch Ridge Golf Course with a fellow parishioner from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Northwest Tucson. He had just returned from an extended vacation and wasn’t feeling well.

And so he opted to drop from a 6 iron to a 4 iron on the Par 3 ninth hole of the 9-hole course at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort.

Switching allowed him an easier swing to get the ball from the tee to the flag some 160 yards away.

He swung and the ball flew straight over the fairway and a sand trap, dropping on the edge of the green where it rolled about 5 feet toward the pin. That was when Smith glanced away for just a moment.

When he looked back, he didn’t see his ball. His golf partner noted as they approached the green that the ball had disappeared.

When they reached the pin, the men were stunned to see the ball sitting happily in the cup.

“I was numb. I didn’t believe it because I didn’t think it would make it to the green,” Smith told The Explorer.

Smith also scored a birdie and several par holes that day, despite being sick.

“The day went well,” he said.
