The Pima Community College softball team (30-16, 22-12 in conference) earned its third straight sweep on the road defeating Scottsdale Community College on Thursday in Scottsdale. Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) continued her dominance at the plate going 3-7 with four RBIs. She has 12 RBIs in the last four games.

The Aztecs scored four runs in the top of the 8th inning to win the first game 5-2 in eight innings. Ortiz and Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) did damage at the plate in the 7th and 8th innings. Alvarez got on base after hitting a double and was driven in by an Ortiz RBI single to put Pima up 1-0 in the 7th. Tied, 1-1, Alvarez gave the Aztecs the lead for good with her 3-run RBI double in the 8th. Ortiz followed that up with another RBI single. Alvarez (14-11) pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.

The 5th inning was good to the Aztecs in the second game as they scored four runs in the inning to beat Scottsdale 10-3. Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS) each had RBI singles to help build Pima’s lead to 8-0 at that point. They also each scored a run in the game. Victoria Mariscal (Douglas HS) had an RBI single in the 6th inning to help put the game away. She finished 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI for the game.

Ortiz went 1 for 3 in the game with a 2-run RBI single in the 1st inning to get the Aztecs on the board. Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) went 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI for the game. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) picked up her 12th win of the season after pitching seven innings giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play at Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday in Phoenix. The first game of the doubleheader will start at noon.
