The men’s basketball team (3-0) led the majority of the game and made free throws down the stretch to beat the New Mexico Military Institute 90-83 on Friday in the first day of the Pima Tournament at the West Campus’ Aztec Gym.
The Aztecs led by as much as 18 in the second half but New Mexico went on a 14-2 run to cut Pima’s lead to four with 2:31 left in the game. Terrence Carroll (Cordova HS, TN) made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to help seal it for the Aztecs. Carroll finished with a team-high 18 points.
Lawrence Pierce (Peoria HS) scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half while DeVante Williams (O’Dea HS, WA) finished with 13. Marcus Mears (Buena HS) contributed with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Aztecs will close out the tournament on Saturday against Odessa College (Texas) at 3 p.m. at the West Campus.
